The Boston Online Film Critics Association Announces Its Formation

May 24, 2012 (Boston, MA) – The Boston Online Film Critics Association announced their official formation today, seeking to fill a void in the Boston film criticism community. Monica Castillo, freelance writer for The Phoenix, El Planeta, and Dig Boston, and Daniel Kimmel, author and writer for Variety, North Shore Movies, and The Jewish Advocate will serve as co-chairs for 2012 calendar year.

The organization’s membership will be comprised of both established and up-and-coming online film critics based in the Boston area. Critics from respected outlets such as The Improper Bostonian, Edge Boston, Post-Movie Podcast, Boston Latino, Starpulse.com, and filmcritic.com have already joined this new organization, which plans to expand its roster in the coming year.

Boston is home to a thriving film scene, with a burgeoning community of critics writing for publications that collectively receive over 15 million impressions/page views per month. The Boston Online Film Critics Association will gather together some of the most exciting personalities in the online world of film criticism.

The first annual Boston Online Film Critics Association awards will be handed out at the end of 2012. As with its focus in the Boston area, Boston Online Film Critics Association will award accolades to local filmmakers and individuals who have an important hand in shaping the local film community. In addition to year-end awards, the organization will be actively involved in the Boston film community by hosting events such as screenings, film discussion groups, participating in local film festivals and supporting up-and-coming filmmakers.

Evan Crean: Hello! My name is Evan Crean. By day I work for a marketing agency, but by night, I’m a film critic based in Boston, MA. Since 2009, I have written hundreds of movie reviews and celebrity interviews for Starpulse.com. I have also contributed pieces to NewEnglandFilm.com and to The Independent, as a writer and editor. I maintain an active Letterboxd account too. In addition to publishing short form work, I am a co-author of the book Your ’80s Movie Guide to Better Living, which is available on CreateSpace and Amazon. The book is the first in a series of lighthearted self-help books for film fans, which distills advice from ’80s movies on how to tackle many of life’s challenges. On top of writing, I co-host and edit the weekly film podcast Spoilerpiece Theatre with two other Boston film critics. I’m a founding member and the current treasurer for the Boston Online Film Critics Association as well. This site, Reel Recon.com, is a one-stop-shop where you can find links to all of my past and present work. Have any questions or comments after checking it out?
