Spoilerpiece Theatre Episode 47: Aloha

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK

“Spoilerpiece Theatre” is a weekly movie podcast where I talk about new releases with fellow BOFCA critics Dave Riedel and Kris Jenson. We don’t give a shit about spoilers. We just want to talk about the movies.

In Episode 47 below, Sam Cohen makes his first ever podcast appearance to join us in reviewing Aloha, Spy, and Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. Being the yougin’ that he is, Sam shares his experience watching Big Trouble in Little China for the first time. We discuss its impending remake along while comparing Kurt Russell and The Rock. Then Sam tells us about Cameron Crowe’s degeneration as a filmmaker with his nonsensical movie Aloha. None of us know what a gate opening ceremony is or how music by David Bowie can blow up a satellite, but apparently both are important plot elements. Thankfully Kris and Sam saw Spy, which pleasantly surprised both of them. After they tell me all about why I should see it, Sam and I finish up the show by talking about Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. Want to find out why the documentary gave me all the feels? Then tune in.

Since 2009, I have written hundreds of movie reviews and celebrity interviews for Starpulse.com. I have also contributed pieces to NewEnglandFilm.com and to The Independent, as a writer and editor. I maintain an active Letterboxd account too. In addition to publishing short form work, I am a co-author of the book Your ’80s Movie Guide to Better Living, which is available on CreateSpace and Amazon. The book is the first in a series of lighthearted self-help books for film fans, which distills advice from ’80s movies on how to tackle many of life’s challenges. On top of writing, I co-host and edit the weekly film podcast Spoilerpiece Theatre with two other Boston film critics. I’m a founding member and the current treasurer for the Boston Online Film Critics Association as well. • Great stuff Evan and Sam. Big Trouble was, I must admit, a big favorite for me as a teenager. Still love it today.

I did watch Montage of Heck recently and although it was an informative, well produced documentary I still felt it was a bit sanitized, in no small part because of the family involvement. That said, the fact his daughter and Courtney Love were so supportive of the film led to it featuring a lot of fascinating detail into Cobain's life.

    • Not surprised to hear that Big Trouble was a big favorite for you as a teenager. Our mutual appreciation for the 80s is well-documented Dan. I mostly thought about the positive impact of involving Cobain's family, but you're right, the other side to that is that they probably sanitized the less glamorous aspects of his life. Good point. Thanks for listening!
